Language Usage
Overview
The NWEA MAP Growth Language Usage test measures your student’s working knowledge of the mechanics of language. They will be tested on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphs, and so on. See the Fact Sheet below for more information.
Language Usage 2+ has the ability to cover language usage skills and concepts from 2nd through 12th grade.
The Language Usage test starts with questions that align to your student’s grade and then adapts quickly to match your student’s current learning level.

Designed for 2nd through 12th grade students.
The NWEA MAP Growth Language Usage test for grades 2–12 is for students who are comfortable with longer reading passages and are reading independently.
Text-to-speech accommodation is available for those that need it.

Every state has their own requirements but most states require math and reading test scores at a minimum. Please see our state-by-state guide to determine the test scores you will need to meet their requirements.
As far as we know, North Carolina is the only state that requires language usage in addition to the math and reading tests.
The reading test evaluates a student’s reading ability and comprehension.
The language usage test evaluates a student’s ability to understand and apply correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and so on.
