MAP Growth

What is MAP Growth?

NWEA® MAP® Growth™ tests are K-12 interim assessments that measure growth and inform how educators differentiate instruction, evaluate programs, and structure curriculum.

MAP® stands for Measures of Academic Progress®. The first iteration of MAP was released in 2000 by NWEA®. Thanks to rapid improvements in technology, the MAP test became more accessible for most students and replaced the older, more limited test options that were available at that time. The name MAP® Growth™ was introduced in 2017.

MAP Growth tests are nationally-normed, standardized achievement tests that assess student growth.

Since 2018, MAP tests continue to be used by millions of students (and counting) worldwide. Homeschool Boss offers MAP Growth tests in Math, Reading, Language Usage, and Science to students in the United States that are homeschooled or attend small private schools. These untimed, online tests are taken on your computer or iPad and administered remotely by Homeschool Boss’s team of attentive proctors and support team. Check the compatibility of your device here.

There is no degree requirement for parents or guardians for their students to be eligible to take the MAP Growth tests at home.

Support Growth with Adaptive Assessments

Computer adaptive MAP Growth assessments reveal precisely which academic skills and concepts the student has acquired and what they’re ready to learn.

MAP Growth assessments are grade independent and adapt to each student’s instructional level.

Every item on a MAP Growth assessment is anchored to a vertically aligned equal interval scale, called the Rasch UnIT scale (RIT) – a stable measurement, like inches on a ruler, that covers all grades.

Because the measurement is reliable and accurate, RIT scores serve as an essential data point in a student’s learning plan; educators can see their precise learning level and respond accordingly.

MAP Growth creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level – precisely measuring student progress and growth for each individual. You’ll have essential information about what each student knows and is ready to learn within 48 hours of completing each test.

Norming Data

NWEA’s updated norms were implemented July 2025.

NWEA routinely conducts norming studies of select school years to ensure consistency and relativity for today’s student population. The new 2025 norms includes data from Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons of the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years.

Administration of MAP Growth Tests

Testing is by appointment. Multiple students may test at the same time, as long as each has their own computer or iPad*. The standard recommendation is for a student to complete one subject per day. However, we know that students work at different paces and we can accommodate more than one test per day as needed. Each test has 45 questions max and, on average, takes about 1 hour to complete.

All MAP Growth tests are untimed overall with one timed aspect to be mindful of. MAP Growth’s one timed aspect is per question. Each question has a 15 minute window. If 15 minutes is surpassed with no answer submission, the system will lock the test or freeze. If a lockout or freeze happens, do not worry! There is no penalty and we simply load a new question for your student to try again.

Many accommodations are available.

What To Expect After Testing

After testing, each student will receive an individualized report for each subject.

If you are familiar with MAP Growth reports from a public school administration, you will notice that ours differ slightly. Rest assured, our reports contain the same valuable information plus some bonus material and have been fully approved of by NWEA.

Our reports are generally well understood after an initial walk-through of one. We offer a detailed self-administered walk-through at no cost as well as 15-minute consultations for a $35 fee.
