NWEA® MAP® Growth™ tests are K-12 nationally-normed, standardized achievement tests that assess student growth.
There is no degree requirement for parents or guardians for their students to be eligible to take the MAP Growth tests at home.
Homeschool Boss offers MAP Growth tests in Math, Reading, Language Usage, and Science to students in the United States that are homeschooled or attend small private schools. These untimed, online tests are taken on your computer or iPad and administered remotely by Homeschool Boss’s support team. Check the compatibility of your device for MAP Growth here.
Support Growth with Adaptive Assessments
Computer-adaptive MAP Growth assessments reveal precisely which academic skills and concepts the student has acquired and what they’re ready to learn.
MAP Growth assessments are grade independent and adapt to each student’s learning level.
MAP Growth creates a personalized testing experience by adapting to each student’s learning level. This precisely measures their individual progress and growth.
You’ll have essential information about what each student knows and is ready to learn within 48 hours of completing each test. Take a look at a sample score report by clicking on the link below ⤵︎

When you register a child for testing their appointment will default to the assessment designed for their grade level. For example, a 3rd grader will be assigned the 2-5 test levels by default.
Second-grade is recognized as a transitional year for reading, therefore we ask our clients to indicate if their students are pre-readers or readers to determine if they will take the K-2 or 2-5 assessments.
If you need more information about MAP Growth testing for homeschoolers and the levels that would be the best fit for your children, please read our transition guide for gifted and advanced students or email us at SALES@HOMESCHOOLBOSS.COM with any questions.
Norming Data
NWEA’s updated norms were implemented July 2025.
NWEA routinely conducts norming studies of select school years to ensure consistency and relativity for today’s student population. The new 2025 norms data is from Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons of the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years that include 116 million scores from 13.8 million students who attended 30k+ schools in 7,000 districts in all 50 states.
Administration of MAP Growth Tests
Testing is by appointment. Multiple students may test at the same time, as long as each has their own computer or iPad*. The standard recommendation is for a student to complete one subject per day. However, we know that students work at different paces and we can accommodate more than one test per day as needed. Each test has 45 questions max and, on average, takes about 1 hour to complete.
All MAP Growth tests are untimed overall with one timed aspect to be mindful of. MAP Growth’s one timed aspect is per question. Each question has a 15 minute window. If 15 minutes is surpassed with no answer submission, the system will lock the test or freeze. If a lockout or freeze happens, do not worry! There is no penalty and we simply load a new question for your student to try again.
Many accommodations are available.
MAP Growth Administration Guidelines
MAP Growth tests can be taken once per season for a total of three administrations per year. Please see the MAP Growth season dates below.
2026-2027 MAP Growth Season Dates
Fall: August 10 to Nov 25, 2026
Winter: Nov 30 to Feb 26,2027
Spring: March 1 to July 30, 2027
MAP Growth tests must be completed during our hours of operation. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8AM-7PM CST.
A parent or other trusted adult is required to be present while students are testing.
What To Expect After Testing
Students receive individualized reports for each subject.
If you are familiar with MAP Growth reports from a public school administration, you will notice that ours differ slightly. Rest assured, our reports contain the same valuable information plus some bonus material and have been fully approved of by NWEA.
Our reports are generally well understood after an initial walk-through of one. We offer a detailed self-administered walk-through at no cost as well as 15-minute consultations for a $35 fee.
