If your kid is one of the 13-million students who use iReady as their primary source of education for Math, Reading, or Language Arts, it may be time to reconsider its usefulness. <\/span>Education Progress is suing i-Ready<\/span><\/a> on the basis of misrepresentative claims of efficacy. For some homeschooling families, iReady may be the exact reason they pulled their student out of their public or charter school, and they wouldn\u2019t be alone. This lawsuit by Education Progress follows multiple highly-visible claims by parents, teachers, and school administrators through <\/span>Unherd<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>NBC<\/span><\/a>\u00a0y <\/span>Chalkbeat<\/span><\/a>, that i-Ready actively harms students’ educational progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

If you are unfamiliar with iReady\u2019s rapid expansion and the subsequent revolt that has ensued from parents, teachers, and students, you will need to understand the educational landscape following Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Following the pandemic, there was a push for greater tracking of students’ educational aptitudes, as the impact of the pandemic on student learning was still being understood. There was a great deal of concern with the pace of students learning, and having emerged from a period where almost every school adapted to using some forms of ed-tech, school administrators were more open than they ever had been to new technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At that time, iReady was an education technology company that had existed since 2011\u2013 a trusted player compared to other rapidly developing fledgling ed tech companies in the space. This private-equity backed education technology company used this push for greater tracking and <\/span>rapidly expanded during this time<\/span><\/a>. They marketed with a simple promise: to identify when students are falling behind, to personalize education for each child, all with a promise of raising test scores. School administrators from across the spectrum, from microschools to large public schools, and even homeschooling families, bought into these promises and the tech company quietly took over the education landscape. Today, nearly one-third of the entire American student population uses i-Ready daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Why Are Parents and Teachers Pushing Back Against iReady? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Concerning reports of <\/span>\u00a0students bored to tears, frustrated educators, and lagging student progress<\/span><\/a> started almost as soon as this program was broadly rolled out. Mounting backlash has been widely reported, with veteran educators reportedly quitting because of iReady’s rollout in their classroom, children losing interest in a subject they once loved, and a growing number of parents posting vitriolic reviews of the program online.<\/span> A 2023 study<\/span><\/a> by Johns Hopkins University on iReady\u2019s personalized instruction programs highlight debates about the research basis for the software. Conclusions from the study demonstrated moderate evidence in the advancement in mathematics for students who used iReady, but no significant progress in reading. In addition to this, the lack of peer-reviewed research or randomized controlled trials to measure iReady\u2019s efficacy has been <\/span>cited by scholars <\/span><\/a>as a major concern following its rapid and almost universal rollout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The backlash reached a crescendo in the spring of 2026, but no action was seemingly taken by the organization or the large number of school districts who had adopted iReady.
