One of the most common questions I get asked these days is \u201c<em>what is an education savings account, and can I get funding for my homeschooled kiddo<\/em>?&#8221; Like any homeschooling policy, it will <a href=\"https:\/\/homeschoolboss.com\/state-by-state-guide\/\">depend on your state<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Education savings accounts, or \u201cESAs\u201d are state-funded savings accounts loaded with a portion of the money that your state government would have used to fund your child attending their public K-12 school. However, if you see that your state primarily offers scholarships, you may want to make sure that these are actually education scholarship <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accounts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and not scholarship <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vouchers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Scholarship vouchers are a more restrictive form of funding provided by states that primarily fund students tuition for private schools.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your state has a<\/span><b> \u2018universal ESA program\u2019, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this means that all students K-12 are eligible for an ESA, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regardless<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of income or disability status.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your state has a \u2018<\/span><b>targeted ESA program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, this means that your state offers ESAs, but with some restrictions on who is eligible. This is generally based on your child\u2019s disability status, your families income, or if your local public school is a low performer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to know is that \u2018<\/span><b>Coverdell ESAs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 are NOT state-funded K-12 savings accounts. Instead, you fund them with your personal savings. You can contribute up to $2000 a year for each student.
